Name: Edward (Ed) Theodore Gein
Date: October 24th
Prepared by: Kari Kuss
Presenting Problem: Ed is a 51-year-old unmarried white male who is convicted with the murder of two women and possible five more. He has an abnormal attachment to his dead mother. He has memory deficits. He has issues with Transvestic fetishes. He is necrophilia as well with women whom look like his dead mother. He has dug up graves of women his mother’s age. The psychiatrist states that he is schizophrenic. The state has requested therapy. His mother wished him to be a girl so he might have gender issues.
Family of Origin: Mother Augusta, she was a religious tyrant, she verbally abused him and her husband. Ed put her on a pedestal. Augusta supported the family through a successful grocery Business. She despised George, felt he was worthless, and gave him no part in raising the two boys. Father George P. was an abusive alcoholic who worked periodically as a carpenter, a tanner, and a farmer that died of pneumonia. He had an older brother Henry that didn’t agree with his mother’s ways and Ed is suspected of killing him from criticizing her.
Birth and Childhood: August 27, 1906 in LaCrosse, WI. His mother wanted him to be a girl. He spent most of his time doing farm chores. Ed began school at Roche-a-Cri grade school, a tiny one-room building with 12 students. Ed was average at school, but an excellent reader. Ed was shunned and isolated at school because of his lazy eye and his shyness. Augusta severely punished Ed when he did attempt to make friends. Ed graduated the eighth grade and then dropped out of school.
Marriages and Significant Relationships: Never married no significant relationships
Current Living Arrangements: Living alone in Plainfield, WI
Education: He went to school to the 8th grade then dropped out.
Military Service: None
Ed was still eligible for the draft and had to travel to Milwaukee for a physical exam. He was rejected due to the growth on his left eyelid, which slightly impaired his vision. This was the farthest from home he had ever been and the only time in his life he would travel so far.
Employment History: He hung windows, patched roofs, painted houses, repaired fences. He babysat for children as he could relate to them better. He also worked for a road building contractor.
Medical History: A growth on his left eyelid caused Ed to have a “lazy” eye. He had a lesion on his tongue which caused his speech to sound weird. He is schizophrenic and a sexual psycho path.
Legal History: November 16, 1957 he was arrested for the murder of Bernice Warden. He confessed to the murder of Mary Hogan from December 8, 1954. He was suspected of five more.
Social and Recreational Interests: His mother prevented him from developing any friends. So he had poor social skills. He read books about which included head shrinking, grave robbing, and many books on human anatomy.
Religious Activities: He was brought up Lutheran and his mother was a religious fanatic. She drilled it into him that drinking was evil and that all women were whores. His mother read from the bible nightly.
Successes/Strengths and Resources:
Impressions and Recommendations: Ed is a 51-year old unmarried white male who is convicted with the murder of two women and possible five more. The murders started around the time after his mother passed away. He is functioning on a level that he is only admitting to committing two murders. He seems to have areas of memory loss and isn’t affected by the public’s reaction. He however has an insight on whether or not he dug up the graves of middle aged women. He believes at one point he has recovered his mental health and wants to be released. He is motivated to change. Client appears to have impaired mental and social functioning.
Recommendations for Ed are as follows: Recommend a mental health treatment and a psych evaluation for his schizophrenia and necrophilia issues and 12 counseling sessions to address why he had committed the crimes he was convicted of.

Week 12 Blog Post
You will have moments in your life when you feel like you have made a difference for another person. If this has already happened for you, tell me what that looked like. If it hasn't yet, tell me what you think it will be like.
I work with this lady Bonnie Lindow she is in her upper 50's and is not up on the technology as I am and I have helped her figure out just simple steps that have made her job a lot easier to do. To me its just simple stuff but to her it means a lot more having to do things a longer way. We have created a great friendship along the way as well. She has taught me administration stuff as I have never worked in an office setting before either so it has been a give take lasting relationship. I find you can learn something from anyone you meet usually at some point.

Week 11 Blog Post
How is it going? In field, in classes, just in general. I'm checking in to see how you are as we begin to wind down the term.
We get a new Executive Director on November 16th Raechel Sherfield. Bonnie finds out if the board will hire her on as a permanent administrator assistant this coming wk at their board meeting. She pretty much has been the glue to keep this place running smoothly. If she leaves I think they will struggle for awhile. She has put in her year's time awhile ago already from the program through the Senior Center. I have been making my decisions on what classes to take for my last semester and what to carry over for the summer. I think I will end up taking the rest online that are available just so I can make money at my new job. I started driving taxi on October 17th for the elderly and handicapped as that is pretty much most of my clientele. I really like it so far and the pay is pretty good for start out too. As I told you I was accepted into UW Oshkosh last week for their online leadership program. So hopefully when we get a new director I can get some of my assignments questions for field answered but yet I don't want to bombard her too much right away. This semester has been a lot easier than the summer which has been nice so who knows what the spring will bring me...

D.B. 9 Blog Prompt
1. How do you get feedback from your supervisor at your agency? I just ask Bonnie the administrator, Tara the Parent Educator or Carole the other Parent Educator. Tara's last day is November 4th and Tammy Dahl will be taking her place. As far as the circumstances to the comment left by you in the grading section. I just explained what really happened as she didn't know what had occurred between Linda & I. It's been 3 weeks since we haven't had a director and we are managing to get by but nobody can make any decisions on anything until we hire a new Director maybe a Rachel Loucks is a possibility but who knows.
2. Do you feel you are getting adequate feedback? If not, what can you do to get more feedback. Yes, for the circumstances that the Parent resource Center is going through with all the employee changes.

LP 7 Blog Prompt
What self-care activities did you do this week?
I got at least 6 hrs of sleep. I cranked the radio and sang along to it. I played some Mafia Wars and Sorority Life on facebook. I went out of town Saturday to get away from it all. I had a glass of wine with some relatives around a bonfire.
Is your resume and cover letter up to date? Remember, Job Seeking Skills Workshops are at NTC on Monday 1-2PM, Tuesday 3-4PM, and Thursday 8-9AM if you need help. Yes I needed it for my Field 2 application.
That lecture from Teri Jendusa Nicolai was very good about Domestic Violence Awareness. Well worth my time to travel over for it.

Round Robin Bringing Up Difficult Issues
The concept of the “I statements” were geared toward the clients understanding the situation. The confrontation scenarios put it into perspective of what the client needed to understand what was going on. I think you had to give some thought obvious to the questions and answers. The “I statements” were a lot easier to answer then the confrontation answers. There are proper rules though on how to confront someone. There may some discrepancies when you confront someone. The “I message is broken into four parts. You must be matter of fact on the subject. Yet be tentative and focus on tangible behavior or communication. You should take full responsibility for your observations. You should collaborate with the client to they feel there is teamwork. Make sure you don’t accuse the other person though so they feel put on the spot. You should not ever confront someone because you are angry. Don’t be judgmental on the client either they don’t want to feel in adequate. The client needs to come up with the solution on their own. Make sure you ask the clients permission to share ideas so you don’t offend them. They may not always agree with what you want to share from your point of view. You will want to make sure there are not interruptions when you are interviewing your client. Otherwise you may not get the needed information that can be crucial to the case. You don’t want to appear overbearing to them either. Nobody likes to hear a know it all. You may want to give your own point of view but it must be done cautiously and with considerable discretion. We want to introduce another perspective so they may have more than one idea to go from when deciding. We need to express our concern for the clients so they feel there is an understanding between us.
I think giving the other classmates what my thought would have been if they are any different doesn’t bother me because most are virtual strangers. I think what I wrote was adequate information on what I learned from this assignment on the two different kinds of scenarios. As I am not a practicing professional I only can go by what I have learned from a text book or scenarios that teachers have told us about as well. I think I give fairly well feedback on what knowledge I have on the subject as I am not the teacher and I only know so much. I think it’s important to know the difference on “I statements and confrontation skills as working with many different clients in the Human Service profession you will encounter many different scenarios that clients will have to deal with. I learned there is a right way to handle certain topics with care in touchy topics. We want to address to the client that there are other solutions to difficult problems but we still want them to make their best decision on the issue. We need to learn how to bring up difficult subject so the communication flows well when counseling clients.

Casemanager Interview Assignment
I interviewed Julie Clarkson from Taylor County Human Services Department in September at her office because she is a social worker that I know of that is what may interest me in a career down the road. They promote and encourage the well being, safety, independence, and self-sufficiency of all Taylor County individuals and families through the provision of supportive services. She is a social worker in the Children and Family Services Unit. She acquired the position by replying to an ad in the local newspaper. She works with abused and neglected children and their families doing case management. She monitors the safety of children, relative or foster care placements, providing appropriate services to the family and collaborating with all of the service providers to assure needs of the family are being met. Julie also works with Delinquent and Juvenile in Need of Protection and Services cases. She is the “go-to” person for our Wisacwis system. The issues her clients face are the same issues in all units (Mental Health, Long Term Support, Economic Assistance, Children and Family Services and Developmental Disabilities.) She had to learn how to read what the limitations and obligations were according to state statute. She learned training in safety, how the court process worked, and how to write court reports. Julie had to learn to trust her instincts and be very observant to time, place, facial and body gestures, words, inflection in voice, environment, pets, home exits and the mood of clients. She had to learn appropriate and thorough documentation of what she saw, heard and smelled. Her days start out “unknown.” Every day is different and there are always things that pop up to deal with that you aren’t expecting, such as a child taken into custody the night before, etc. She has days where she sits and does paperwork most of the day. She may have some home visits to clients’ houses or see kids at school. She has supportive co-workers that work cooperatively together and have flexible schedules.
In the agency, Managed Family Care is occurring over the next few years which will offer services to elderly and developmentally disabled clients. It may impact clients by offering different programs (better or worse). There are funding cuts, which make it even more difficult to provide needed programs to clients, such as in-home counseling and in-home parent education, AODA services for juveniles, respite care services for families, etc. The county is requiring them to take furlough days. This takes time away from the clients who can be very needy. This can lead to increased inpatient mental health placements, suicidal clients, placement in juvenile detention or foster care. She says their management is very supportive of the staff. Her co-workers can separate their personal feelings from work feelings. Ethical Dilemmas can be very straightforward at times and others can be open interpretation. Probably the most common that they run into is handling cases with people that they know personally. They try to avoid that if all possible. They may have to request an outside agency to do an investigation or supervision because of conflict of interest. It is a dilemma when a client needs something, like a couch and you may have one, but are not supposed to give it to them. Or they have a pet they are not taking care of and want to give it to you personally, but you cannot take it from them.
In the past ten years, staff turnover at the agency has been minimal, hiring maybe one person a year. Other agencies that she knows have approximately three people a year. Julie recommends a Bachelor or Master’s Degree because that is what most employers are looking for right now. She recommended that I do as much volunteering or field placement as I can in the area I want to practice. She said the average entry level wage is $18.55-$24.66 per hour. The higher is a Medical Assistance Certified MSW, which is their therapist. Positions within the agency start with union postings and then are advertised with the local newspaper and websites. The typical interview process is to interview with the Human Resource Manager, the Human Services Director and the direct Supervisor of the position. All three interview at once. She told me to run seriously. She would go into a different field or at least continue her education to get a MSW or PHD to do counseling. They don’t have enough psychologists in the area. She enjoys what she does for the most part and it is important work, but it is very taxing on a person to be disliked by the majority of the clients and not having resources to meet their needs.
I still am interested in this field even after hearing the negative side to this profession. The positive’s out way the negatives by giving back or helping some family, child, or adult receive the best care available to them. I will have to get my Bachelor’s degree for sure in this economy as jobs are hard to come by these days. The more education the better your chances are for a better qualified career in this field. I realize I may need to actually move as well. It is tough to find a job in a small community in this field. As they usually hire within and I think not knowing people that I know from my local community will be the best idea. The idea of moving somewhere new excites me but also kind of freaks me as well. I think anything new that gets someone out of their comfort zone will though. I look forward to finding a career in this profession down the road. I hope to make a small difference in someone’s life someway. In these struggling times the need for Human Services has risen in the past couple of years. So hopefully when I finish all of my schooling there will be some great jobs available for me. I am interested in the Psychology aspect of this field so far.

LP 6 Blog Prompt
Who are you interviewing for your Informational Interview that is due with the portfolio at the end of the term? Carol Buehler Parent educator that works with me.
Have you been working on updating your resume and tweaking your cover letter? Yes I just did for Field 2.
How has your professional self developed through your time here at NTC? I would like to think I have grown since I had to relearn how to study & do homework after how many years. I have learned a lot in the past year that I know that will stick more now that I am older than if I was 18 lol.
Anything else I need to know? Need to vent? Share good stuff? Do it here...
Well with the good stuff 1st. I am meeting my little on Friday night & if all goes well we will be going on a hayride at Camp Forest Springs. Now for the venting.
As far as the last couple of weeks goes yes I have been busy with other classes and life. I know my discussion board has been lacking. I knew the consequences but I had a lot on my plate and in my personal life.
Sorry to say but good riddance...Linda Heinkel is no longer employed with Parent (Family) Resource Center as of 5 Pm 2night. Peggy Nordgren board president will be there on Tuesday. Carol Buehler will be in charge of a lot of stuff until we have a new director. As far as her reprimand of me. Everyone that I told what actually happened told me she was an evil woman. She would tell you one thing but had you doing how many projects all at once and she would forget what she told you. She accused me of not going to a presentation that she gave last week when she never told me about it. I have contacted the last two interns & they all had the same stuff to say about her. As far as that employee goes about the confidentiality she was eves dropping on Bonnie the administration assistant & I. She made the cleaner girl get down on her hands & knees & scrub the floor & the girl had cerebral palsy. Bonnie was telling me this because she thought it was wrong of her to make this girl have to do this and the girl ended up quitting. I think because of us talking about her & what she made that girl do. It made her make it known to me that she had all the power and she could make my life hell. Bonnie doesn't work for Parent Resource Center. She works for a Senior program. So she couldn't do anything about what she told me & this was her way of getting back. We had discussed that I disobeyed her by going to a visitation after she told me no. I had a prearranged visitation (which is what program I interested in Human Services not marketing or business)with Carol that I forgot to tell her & she was in a meeting when we left & it did slip my mind that she wanted me to stay & work on more marketing of the facebook page which was supposed to be fun but in the end it sure wasn't. I thought last Thursday when I left we had it resolved though. I apologized to her told her I was in the wrong.
That's why they didn't have a cleaner and we did the cleaning which like I said I had no problem with. I have cleaned many places of employment so no big deal. I now know why she made such a big deal about the cleaning issue. She had me work on something on facebook & then have me change it because it wasn't up to her standards. All the interns told me that she would have you do something but then go do it how she wanted in the end anyway. She was constantly preaching politics to me when I was brought up to not talk about religion or politics it's your own personal belief. I really liked her in the beginning but Bonnie warned me. She said I would get my turn. She had a few different faces she showed. Her fake side was pretty pathetic when she was trying to impress the board of directors. She was constantly cutting my community of Medford down. Always talking about the corporate world when this is little Medford, WI. I praised her a lot because she was that kind of person that loves to hear great things about themselves. It made her feel all important. I met Peggy a couple weeks ago at the baby fair I went to & I do know that she has no intention of the Firehouse Exchange program, it isn't even on her radar. We have enough used clothing places here in town already. I was trying to act professional about this that's why I didn't make it a big deal because I knew she was leaving. There will be many happy people come Tuesday in the office. When I arrived Tuesday at my internship I had to run an errand with her right off the start and she acted as if nothing happened and was nice as can be to me. I then got to see her fake nice as can be profile as we interacted with some well known public business leaders. Like it never happened. After you telling me that 20 min. prior wow the composure that I had to have was WOW. Especially after hearing her put my internship in jeopardy. I told Bonnie what went down she couldn't believe it. So there is my side of it from a more awake not shocked just out of bed me. Sorry I was watching the Monday night Packer game against her damn Chicago Bears (she's from Chicago)that beat us! Oh she was so giddy when I complemented her on the win it was quite sickening. I am not a fake person you get me how I am all the time that's how I will always be true to myself and everyone around me. By the end of the week I had the newsletter she wanted me to start and she seemed to be over joyed at the progress of it. As I was leaving she was in a meeting with Bonnie & Tara so I felt I had had a good week after what had gone down. But when Bonnie called me after my Behavior Assessment class tonight to tell me she just came home from celebrating with four beers her demise. Which says a lot coming from an older person how bad she was. She was so happy she was leaving she even helped her pack.
Looking forward now to the rest of the semester of Field. I can't possibly have that again with the new director!

Dimensions of Culture/Webquest Assignment
http://www.ntc.edu:2051/login.aspx?direct=true&db=c8h&AN=2009640638&site=ehost-live
The work at home culture will benefit if employees use it to benefit them as it will help the company in the long run. Productive employees means a productive company all around. The major problem is that a lot of employees perceive it that if they use it then that will harm their career. It truly depends on if the company is family oriented or not. I think support is crucial and if there is no support then the work home arrangement features will fail. If the employee worries about their personal issues then it distracts them from being the best productive employee they could be. So having flexible family arrangements brings positive working employees. It's a win win all around both personal and professional as it will reflect back on both.
With cultures these days that have both parents working I think this was a great article on the work home arrangements that support working family's in this day and age. It had a study on the demographic of the work home arrangement and the results from several years back and not too much has changed in the scenario since then as far as the economy. So the data was useful and accurate as far as working families goes. That is is nice if you can find a family oriented company as they support work home arrangements. The article covered all the data I needed to know on the topic.

There are five primary dimensions of culture: the first is the Power Distance, the second is the Individualism, and the third is Masculinity, the fourth is Uncertainty Avoidance and the last one is Long-Term Orientation. Dimensions are to be used as a guide in accepting the diversity in society connecting countries. Power Distance refers to the level of difference that exists–and is acknowledged–mainly by the fewer influential members of a group, business, organization or society. Individualism refers to the power of connection that people have with others within the community. Masculinity refers to an sign of the respect in which the conventional masculine occupation responsibility representation of accomplishment, power and control is held. Uncertainty Avoidance refers to the culture’s acceptance for uncertainty, unstructured situations and spontaneous events. Long-Term Orientation refers to the extent to which the culture upholds conventional ideals. High or low dimensions influence countries to oppose or agree to change.
I actually learned about this in my Tech Reporting class this summer. I think this source is valid and useful in society and it truthful with the information as written. I already was aware of this as I said previously as I read it from my text book. It had all the pertinent information that was in my text at the time I read it earlier this summer.

The American culture has six dimensions. Learning about our own cultural model provides us with a baseline for evaluating cultures that are diverse. As we expand self-awareness around cultural understanding, we are able to study without jumping to conclusions. We recognize there’s a variation linking what we actually view and how we mark our interpretation based on our own cultural programming. In the development of becoming more attentive of relations with ethnically diverse patients, providers perfect relations skills that promote all patients. Improved patient approval and health outcomes lead to happier providers and more thriving practices. Definitely within the medical background, that’s seen as a win-win situation of great importance. This a manual that covers all four topics that the groups were assigned to. I think this syllabus covers it all. This would be a great manual to use at any health organization. It has all the data needed for certain situations. How to handle situations that have diverse cultures involved.

This article covers the five primary basis again only in depth. It specifically talks about Japan and China's cultural differences toward other cultures. This resource had more information then my second source. It gives more examples to get a better idea. The scope of information is from many reliable sources. It was a review from the summer on the information already learned.I believe it had every possible bit of info there is on the subject.

Wk 4 Blog Prompt
1) Compare your discussion in our classroom versus what you normally would contribute in a face-to-face class. Are you contributing more, less, or about equally?
I think I am contributing as equal as I would in class. I guess it depends what the topic of conversation is about and if it interests me or not.
2) Explain how you facilitate ongoing dialogue in our online classroom. Specifically, what response techniques are you using? You may add a hyperlink, ask a question, expand on a topic, offer a different perspective, or provide a summary of the topic of conversation, or give an opinion of what you think. I have used hyper links, I have asked questions so far. I have expanded on a topic thus far.

Code of Ethics
My agency works with new parents by helping them become educated in child development with their child from the ages of newborn to age three. We work with also with the court approved visitations. We are trying to make sure we have the children's best interest in anything we try to provide them. The children are what we strive to help so they don’t become abused or neglected. Everything is completely confidential so one knows that we serve the clients we do unless the client themselves makes it known to others. We will ask the client if it is all right to share their case between us colleagues. It is our job to make sure that the children basic needs are met. Clients are to be given respect no matter their fashion, differences, and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers try to help encourage, re-establish, and keep relationships together. There should be a trust between the clients established. No one should practice anymore than their competence allows them to. We will use the informed consent with all clients. If there is a conflict of interest we will address it and refer. Under no circumstances is there to be a sexual relationship. Client’s have access to their records. There should not be any personal touching as it may misconstrue the situation and that could lead to sexual harassment. There will be no vulgar language used here. When services are no longer needed counselors need to terminate the relationship with the clients.

This article is based on principle and virtue based. The believers and the skeptics as you will. The article describes the idea behind the events of the believers and skeptics and discovers the potential for upcoming practice and research with respect to decision-making about ethical issues in the social work profession. The principle bases abide by the code even when the code is difficult to follow. Whereas the virtue base find the code can be damaging when trying to do what is best for the client. We are trying not to harm the client any further. The difficulty of any difference within the community/institutional construction, need to be significantly understood in the ethical decision-making development in order to report for ethical trespass and the well-being of the consumer. Methodologies were used to perform the conduct of study and examine the facts. They collected data, interviewed people, and analyzed the data. They consulted with colleagues and listened to the feedback. It is clear that if you don’t want o follow the code of ethics they would prefer you find another profession. They want to make sure you are also working within the scope of your ability. If you aren’t you are to refer to someone else. Make sure the written consent form is followed to the letter. Make sure you are practicing self-care so you don’t get burnt out. Make sure everything is documented to cover your but so to speak in case anything is ever brought up in a legal perspective. What I got out of this is that you are on one side or the other. There is no middle ground.

LP 2 Blog Prompt
My 4 goals I hope to achieve are that I complete my internship successfully without any mishaps. I want to learn all the aspects of what it takes to become a caseworker or social worker both personally and professionally. I want to learn what areas in my own community pertaining to Human Services lack the much needed resource's to be a healthy community. I would like to know what careers are needed the most in this field and how much education is needed to achieve this. I rank them with my 1st one I listed in the order of importance to me. My director shared a comment of praise for my work so far.

Well so far this is going to be a wonderful experience for me. There is a lot to learn here for me. I am like a sponge ready to absorb. I will be able to go on home visitations and that will be life learning. They have me working on the computer helping them get the word out that they exist in the community and surrounding area.
I learned that babies see in black and white the first few months as I did not remember learning that.
I was able to help someone learn a different way to access their files and e-mail that is easier for them on the computer now. I taught someone how to set up a blog that is computer challenged. Its nice to help people understand things and make it easier for them. I like the new teachers I have. My field placement likes what I have done so far with their Face-book page.
I think the the classes I have together will help bounce off of each other this semester. I already have a project to use for two classes bonus. I am glad everyone is so friendly and nice at my field placement. That will make for a great semester field placement.

"Designing Three Levels of Intervention" #2
Mr. Groff is 93 and living alone in his home. He only stopped driving last year. He would like to get out more, perhaps go to the senior citizen's center. In addition, he would like to go to the Lions Club and to participate in a foreign policy club he belonged to for years. He tells you sadly that the members of the foreign policy club always seemed amazed at the reading he had done and the sound opinions he expressed, "as though I should be senile!" Since he stopped driving, he has lost contact with them. Right now he sees no reason to go to a nursing home and feels that if he had transportation he could continue to buy his groceries, prepare his meals, and care for himself generally. He tells you, however, that he would like to find a way to be less lonely.
Intervention on the micro level: Mr. Groff is very motivated in wanting to keep his mind active with others discussing subjects that interest him socially. I think he would bring a lot of history to younger generations. I would look into volunteers that would be willing to drive him to places.I would contact the Lions Club to find out if someone would be willing to pick him up for the meetings.
Intervention on the mezzo level:Introduce him to the senior center for possible other activities and other people to socialize with. He may find other groups to join that he would feel part of. His loneliness would go away possibly then too.
Intervention on the macro level: He may have stories to tell to children in schools. They may gain some valuable knowledge from listening to him. Introduce him to history teachers in the surrounding schools if he is interested in sharing.

Blog Prompt 14
Analyze the impact of social services on the human experience and how things have changed in past decades. We have had to deal with a lot more illegal immigrants wanting services. I think there is a need for more rehab facilities for the substance abuse. The bad economy has added to the stress of trying to employee people. There seems to be more natural disasters. We have had to deal with more terrorist activities. The war that has been going on for so long. There just is more issues it seems. The funding will always be an issue. There are budget cuts so programs that were there are no longer available.
Acquire first-hand experience by volunteering a minimum of ten hours in a human service agency. I volunteered for a large non-profit agency United Way first by getting people to donate money by raffle tickets because they knew it was going for a good cause to give back to the community. The second part I gave my time for a local girl who was diagnosed with leukemia by selling raffle and meal tickets at the door. I didn't know hardly anyone so I wasn't emotionally involved which made it easier for them to have me at the door when they were announcing the winners. I have volunteered a lot when I was in the Jaycees so this is something that I have enjoyed. It's a great way to meet new people.
Examine the history of human services in the U.S. There has been a lot of growth over the years to help our nation. We help the elderly on aging issues. We have helped people with disabilities find work. We have helped with childcare with the child support effort to provide for the welfare of children. The effects that AIDS has on an individual has been a counseling effort. We have established shelters for homeless and domestic abuse. We have come up with a systems to help cloth, feed individuals in need. We have vaccines/immunizations to keep disease control down. We have worked hard to help children safe setting up foster parents or adoptions. We have been working on the big over haul of Health Care-Medicare/Medicaid.
Determine the populations that various human services agencies serve. They serve many races, cultures, languages, genders, young, elderly, criminal offenders, and substance and domestic abuse. They serve the disabled population.
Characterize helping strategies between human service agencies. It's all about working as a team to help the individual get the best possible help.
Identify the characteristics of the helping profession as linked to personal attributes. It makes a person feel good that they can help another individual with some kind of struggle in their life.
Discriminate between ethical and unethical behavior in human service personnel. The relationship outside the a human service provider. There is supposed to be a professional requirement of how you deal with clients no matter how much you would like to help them there are certain boundaries that have to be followed.
Explain the personal qualifications necessary for employment in the human service field.
You must pass the criminal background check. You must have the ability to focus on the main needs of the situation and not let your personal bias or feelings intervene. Certain rules and policies must be followed. You must be able to deal with lots of change. There are the government agencies county and state you have to work with. You should be skilled with technology to complete reports and keep communication verbal or writing up to date. Be able to keep your bias, beliefs to yourself. Be able to work under stressful situations. There will be times when you will need to be assertive when you are the one in charge of evaluating the situation and good judgment will be needed. Make sure you are working safe. Be knowledgeable of the legal laws. Be able to deal with finances. Have an ability to work with many diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
Formulate a plan to avoid human service worker burnout. Just like any job when you leave you have to shelf it for the night. There are things that are out of your control. I like spending time with friends and family talking about positive things. Listening to music and relaxing in front of the TV or a movie.
Explain how human diversity affects human service delivery. How the message is received to the individual. You have to keep your body language in check when dealing with others. Peoples emotions are raw usually when you are dealing with them. They could take something the wrong way. Everyone has different challenges.
Develop a philosophy of life that includes valuing continual educational growth.
We are always learning by observing others. To go to work shops with others in your profession is helpful. Certain situations are learned from just listening to others life experiences. You can't learn everything from a book.

It made me feel happy at the end, that it all worked out. This was a quirky teenage pregnancy movie. It actually was pretty good. I'm not sure I would have been able to do what she did. That is a very hard decision to make. You would have all those hormonal emotions as you carry the baby and how it affects your body. I personally would always be wondering about the child. I'm glad I don't have to walk in those shoes. I think it was the right decision, considering their age. It was very nice, she decided to give him up for adoption. I also respect the decision of not keeping it as well. I think she would have made a good mother in the end. It was funny how they depicted the classmates around her through her nine months. It made me think back to when I was growing up as a teenager. There were a lot of teen pregnancies in my class actually. I liked that her parents were pretty cool about the whole thing. In real life it usually doesn't always happen like that. It was her choice and they respected her decision either way. Her sense of humor was very funny. She knew the consequences and knew she had to make a choice. She handled it maturely.

LP 13 Blog Prompt
I would prefer not to work with the sex offender population. But sometimes in life you don't get everything you want to. A human service worker must breech client confidentiality when a client appears to be posing serious harm to others or it is to prevent suicide or self-harm to themselves. If a a child is suspected of physical, sexual child abuse and neglect. If the elderly or the disabled is suspected of abuse, neglect, physical, sexual or financial. Also if there is court order, subpoena, or a search warrant issued, when a coroner requests records as part of the investigation, and when the client requests that the records be shared. The Patriot Act of 2001 also comes into play with the FBI for personal books, records, papers, documents, and other items of theirs. A dual relationship is inappropriate because it exploits the consumer. They are vulnerable and easy to manipulate. They could be used for the needs of the helper. The helper and the client's relationship could go bad if they had a business or personal relationship. It's too hard to switch roles. The helper could control, need to have someone dependent, need to have companionship's, need for sex and love, or the need for money. The clients emotions are usually very raw when they come into contact with a helper. The first example of a dual relationship is when a client starts hanging out with the family outside the professional world in their daily personal lives and activities. The second would be if a client and a helper started dating. The third would be if the client and the helper decided to work together in a business setting. Counter-transference is when human service workers have feelings toward clients based on unresolved feelings.

LP 12 Blog Prompt
I listen to music that always calms me. Walking on the treadmill.I like to watch comedy sitcoms that make me laugh. I talk with friends about my issues if I have them that helps as well. My three cats help me mellow out to. Yes I registered for both summer and fall classes so I got it done and out of the way. I wonder if I thought this semester wasn't so hard. Is next semester going to be a lot harder? I am taking two online classes this summer which will be pretty much the last of my online classes for awhile which makes me sad because I liked them online so far. Hopefully my summer classes won't be to tough. I will have five three credit classes and my field experience class is one of them so I know it will more of a challenge.

My current stressor's are completing my course work for my classes, taking online tests that are timed, meeting deadlines on time. To get good grades and make sure I pay my bills on time. So anxiety plays a part in my life. Living up to other people's expectations can give you pressure to perform to the best of your ability. We all want to look good in front of our peers, family, significant others. Even healthy living can be stressful.
It makes a person be accountable for their own crap so to speak. To keep oneself in check. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture. I have learned to not get worked up over the little things it just is a waste of my precious energy some days. What will be will be.
I think I am an assertive person that can be aggressive sometimes and that's why I need others to keep me in check sometimes. I am willing to listen to others point of views. I have learned this as being an Assistant Manager at my last job you can't single out people you have to show it to everyone so as to not play the blame game so others will learn from this individuals mistake. Make sure you converse with another individual to get their opinion sometimes that can be a learning lesson in itself alone. Once it is said or written you can not take it back. I have learned this personally and everyone wants harmony in any situation.
Ok you decided to open Ethics for the summer! That made my day. I even did a happy dance, no early morning classes for me for the summer yay! My Badger Crocs came in the mail and yes they are god awful ugly but I think they definitely give me character so I don't care. I finished Moscow in my Mafia Wars so I advanced onto Bangkok lol. I received an A on my Ed Gein project for my Abnormal Psych class that we worked hard on. I found out I will have new neighbors that I think will be descent to have as such close neighbors.
I have learned to write about myself more than I ever have ever in my life so that has been a learning experience. The field placement questions look to be sort of a challenge to me. I am developing my writing skills in the last year with out a doubt but I have been out of school for awhile so you'll have that. Oh yeah and those damn hyperlinks just didn't want to work for me and I'm usually pretty good on figuring out computer related stuff.

I have no experience with suicide personally. I had a friend that lost her brother to it. I know of a guy in my high school that committed suicide.
I feel that my writing skills need a lot of work. Hopefully when I take technical writing this will help improve it.
I think a 12 step program is good to have a check off list. It keeps things in perspective for the individual. That way they have something to achieve in the end.
I just looked over my summer options and saw that ethics will be offered so I know I will now be taking two summer classes oh joy. But I needed this so I can have my field 1 in the fall. I realize I will need to take 15 credits for the next two semesters to finish all of my classes.

LP 9 Blog Prompt
If I only had one year to live to live I would travel and try to see as much as I could with some close friends and family. That way they would have memories of me. I would try to learn as many new things as I could. I would try as many new things as I could. I would try to laugh everyday.
My purpose in life is to work with people and help them. Everyone deserves a second chance in life.
I plan on changing the world by helping people in need. People will always need help. It's a way to give back. I would like to help people understand that we all need to work together to break down the all the stereotype's, discrimination's, and bias's

Mock Interview Wausau Health Services (Methadone Clinic)
I found this interview to be a great learning experience. I had a busy day so I was kind of scattered with so much on my plate. I screwed up and didn't shake her hand and introduce myself. I know better. I was glad to get their feed back. I knew my cover letter would be put through the shredder though. I need to take technical writing yet I know my written word needs work no question. It was the hardest to write actually. I redid that and added some bullet points to my resume. I added another job that I didn't think would matter on my resume, but I was running out of room. They told me to make my white spaces less and that the job was actually a crucial one to put down even if it was only a year's time. I was told to put my bar tending down in my cover letter so they could see that I have dealt with all sorts of personalities. I never thought to put that. It's very true. I was just thinking customer service. Her interview questions weren't to nerve racking. Live and learn. I take criticism well. I would really like to do an internship with this company. Counseling is where I would like to go with my career so far.
LP7 Blog Prompt
I could provide answers to a pregnant teen. I think their are choices are there. I'm pro choice so that may be a reason why I am able to do this easier. I know a lot of people may not agree with me but that why its so great to live in America and have these options.
I think personally one of America's greatest problems is taking care of our own. We have enough poverty here. The basic needs we need are not met here. We tend to stick our nose's in foreign countries when we have issues right in our own back yard to deal with. You don't see other countries very often lending a hand to the United States.
The greatest crime to commit against another is murder no question. Its taking or ending another person's life unwillingly.
The sounds of violent abuse can be screams, arguments,or gun shots. This is what I have learned growing up.
Having such good friends makes me happy. A guy that I'm interested in is being distant. He is going through a divorce right now so I have to understand he has a lot on his plate. I still wonder is this what I want. He is way moodier than I am. We met online and are going to finally meet at the end of semester.
I'm not sure I want to take summer classes. I guess it all depends on if they offer Ethics for sure in the summer. I will then need to take another class to be full time and I was just told not to take Human Sexuality online because its a lot funner in person.
A a friend of mine lost a friend to a motorcycle accident just recently and its something you are never prepared for especially when they are young and had a lot of life to live yet.
So far this semester is better than last I am in my program now and learning stuff that interests me other than boring generals. I have learned to like online classes so this will help me down the road when I want to go on to UW Oshkosh and do it all online so I won't have to move right away. Moving does interest me eventually but financially right now I need to stay where I'm at. Ah if only the job economy would get better.

LP6 Blog Prompt
Other nationalities celebrate different holidays than Americans. This brings different culture aspects into communities. Americans can learn new customs from another culture. I do no that it can ad to conflicts with American careers when this culture celebrates holidays on different days. They need off different days than the American holidays sometimes. They have different radio stations vs. our English radio stations. Some cultures don't like to hear another cultures language spoken when they don't understand it. Not every culture knows every one's language or understands it. So communication is confusing between different cultures on expressing ideas at times. Their can be lots of prejudice about this. A lot of people believe that English should be the number one language spoken in America. It brings different kinds of music into other cultures and spices things up for something new. Other nationalities have their own food vs. American food. How they eat a meal as a family vs. how Americans sit down and eat a meal is a little different too. They have brought their delicious food into other cultures to share new ways of eating different foods. But some cultures aren't willing to try other cultures foods. Other cultures bring lots of new ideas to things in life they help communities grow by having diverse groups of people in a community. Different cultures celebrate different religions. Their way of marriage is different sometimes to. This can be a very touchy subject. How their households are run.
Every culture has their own beliefs, traditions, customs, and values within their own culture and they were brought up on these. Some cultures can be easily offended when their cultures ways are challenged. If I could change American culture I would try and break down more of the barriers between nationalities of certain prejudices that we tend to hold on to other cultures. Every culture should be treated equal.
2. a. George is from the gay community and his parents are strong Catholics.
He is afraid of being rejected from his peers and his parents. He feels ashamed he has let his gay community down.
b.Elena feels she has let her family's beliefs and customs down by breaking a tradition of her culture. They will disown her. She comes from a strong religious Middle East background.
c.The Wilson's feel that they may have racism against them since other white people haven't been willing to help them in the past so they are gun shy when it comes to getting help from another race. It looks though they might give it a chance this time.
d. Thomas is Latino and this culture is dominated by the men. What he says and thinks goes there's only his way. He feels women aren't superior to me. Different morals are being used here. He is a strong family man. There family needs both parents to be healthy and support their children.
e. He feels ashamed for his in digressions. He feels like he has made himself a death sentence. There isn't as much of a stigma on this as there was 20 years ago.

LP 4 Prompt
Yes who hasn't ever had to listen to someone that they would rather not listen to part of life and the learning system.
I don't find my self ever drifting off into space as an adult. With the way our life's have become more busy with technology bored isn't in my vocabulary like it was as a teenager.
SO far reading this text is actually interesting but I want to learn so that's makes a difference.
When someone shuts you out it can be annoying but nothing to get all worked up over. Not everyone is going to find every last detail I have to say that fascinating.
I have a online relationship with this guy and communication is key. So responding back to what I ramble on about or his opinions on what I ask is nice. Its a courtesy thing though it goes both ways. Its the only way you get to know someone better is by listening what they have to bring to the table.
Yeah after being in several weeks I have been picking up more of the people. But even when you have a class room setting that is large and in person you still don't get to know everyone.

My Blog 4 the wk
I would like to think my role in the community is a friendly helping responsible adult to help every race or gender to know there are services out there to help them. When certain ethnic groups need help with the language barrier. Other cultures help a society grow. They bring new and different changes into a community. It helps people grow and learn new ideas. This is how a community grows and brings in new businesses as well to stimulate the economy.
I like what the job center has to offer in helping struggling adults start over in finding a career. I think career decision classes would help benefit adults who don't know what to do when a job loss occurs. I would like to help the people in the community that have lost their jobs along with there health care needs. To help them be educated in what is out there to help them. This is a cause I could go into any community to help with. There is a great need for this right now so I would have no problem going into different communities.
So far I think I have discussed pretty well for being a newbie to this online class. I think I give my opinions to get other people to respond back fairly well. We have quite a big online class so I don't know yet that I really no anybody to well yet but that's to be expected. I have about the same size for a in person class and I only know a few yet in that class.
I like that the Human Service lectures are recorded for us online that is really helpful.

My Learning History
For the most part my elementary schooling was fine or at least from what I can remember. I would have liked some of the newer stuff that the public schools had. As a private school we had to rely on private donations. But we may have had smaller classes with more one on one time with the teacher. Its where I learned my passion to read.
My high school years I was there because I had to. I never was a fan of it. I remember that the classes that I could take that weren't forced on me were absorbed easier. I learned a lot from the teachers that taught the classes that interested me. Basically you get what effort you put into learning when you are young. They had a lot of great teachers.
Everything in my college experience has been very positive. I was kind of nervous going back after so long. So far, as I am older I have a thirst for knowledge because it actually means something more to me. It will help me achieve a career. I have learned to even be able to accomplish math because the way teacher helped make me understand it a little better. I still am not going to ever use it but I passed it! I have enjoyed most of my classes not to say that some of the boring generals are a pain but its a ladder & we all have to climb it.
I have been motivated to learn because I actually found something that interests me. So that helps. With the economy and knowing lots of different age groups all going to school and how friendly everyone is has made for positive experiences. We are all here for one reason and that is to enrich our minds and to come out of this with some knowledge and skills to help us achieve a career. My friends and family all have been encouraging as well. So I have a lot in common with lots my friends of how far I have come so far.
I am pretty confident now about learning. I wasn't as much in the beginning when I first started. I am into my second semester so I have handle on kind of what to expect now.
I have learned to become more studious. These grades actually mean a lot! So I need to focus more and I have learned to cut out the distractions as I am taking a couple of online courses this semester for the first time.
I am trying not to be so last minute on projects that are due.
I learned about the GAF scale in one of my other classes. I didn't realize all the different prisons and the populations of the over crowding in the corrections wow.
I helped a friend come to there own conclusion that they have to make themselves happy first no matter what feelings may be involved. They were very appreciative of my help and told me I would make a great counselor one day by my responses. So that made me feel good to know that I helped them.
I ordered a new handbag from QVC and found out the color on TV can be a lot different then what you thought it looked like in person. I took my first timed online test and I hate being timed! I like to analyze stuff and you couldn't go back to do that. I learned a new way to write a resume that looks way better than what I even learned in a class that had it as a grade for a project. Oh yeah and Dante is Sonny's son was finally revealed to the both of them!

Chapter Review Questions
The generalist approach has to do with taking a holistic view on what's going on in the persons biological life. The basic human needs a person has to have before any psychological or social needs can be made. You have to view the whole scheme of it. Assess what is the best approach to take for that particular client at that time. Make sure all the issues that are going on are met. It may take the help of other human service workers to help complete the care that is needed in this case.
I think electicism is neccessary for being an effective human service worker because you need to be able to look at things in a variety of ways with an open mind and not judge.
An intern is enrolled in a college credit course. A volunteer works at a agency without pay or credit towards a college credit course. An employee is someone who is paid and may have up to a Master Degree, volunteers, or is an intern.
The two reasons I want to work in Human Services is to help counsel others. The need for variety and flexibility. To keep it fresh when one area gets to be to much there are always others areas to go into to help.
This isn't a wealthy occupation to go into its about what you get out of helping others. This isn't a field to go into if you are looking for a power trip of helping others either.
The 1st chapter was pretty much what I expected. I am in this field as I know people will always need help its a way of meeting lots of unique individuals as well.
I am moving up in the world responding to discussion boards and now my own blog! Who new I would become this web savy lol.
I made a guy that was feeling blue on Monday very happy as I shared something with him. I have found some people can get depressed more easily than others. So that made me feel good plus he told me I looked beautiful and that didn't hurt either.
